Film Photography
Digital captures what happened. Film makes you feel like you were there.
What is 35mm film?
There’s something about waiting for the roll to come back. The anticipation. The imperfect frames. The grain. The colors. The photographs you didn’t know would become your favorites until you got them back.
35mm film is a strip of light-sensitive material loaded into the camera, usually 36 frames to a roll. When you press the shutter, light passes through the lens and exposes the film, recording an invisible image in its chemistry. Then you wind on to the next frame.
There’s no preview. You can’t check the shot, adjust, and try again. Light, aperture, shutter speed, focus, composition: every decision happens before you press the shutter. Then you trust it.
Once the roll is finished, a lab develops it. Chemistry turns those invisible images into negatives, which are scanned into digital files or printed. That’s where the waiting comes in, and eventually you get to see what you actually captured.
The grain, the color, the “film look” come from everything along the way: the stock, the exposure, the light, the lens, the development, the scan. Some stocks run warm, some saturated, some soft, some grainy. Choosing one isn’t just a technical decision. It’s part of the aesthetic.
And sometimes a frame isn’t perfectly sharp, or the exposure isn’t quite what you expected. That’s film. You don’t get to correct everything before you see it, and honestly, that’s part of what makes it special. When the roll comes back, you’re not just looking at files on a screen. You’re seeing the moment you trusted yourself to capture.
